Scholarship Update

In 2010-2012, New Enchantment provided a scholarship for Manoel Gomes da Silva to attend a 2-year Environmental Management certificate course in Rio Branco, Brazil. He has successfully completed this course and sent a letter describing the positive impact these studies have provided.
Maui - The Sacred Space that Unfolds Between the Worlds

Maui is a special place. We were taught that the original name for Maui was “Ka ihi ka pa lau (o) maewa” which means "the sacred space that unfolds between the worlds" As you can imagine, there is much depth in the Hawaiian perception of reality and nature. It's a critical mistake to write these ancient people off as 'primitive' or unsophisticated. Far from it, they are formidably profound and so is the land that they live on.

Participating in the inaugural planting was a gift. To learn of the ancient people who first arrived to these islands - a civilization that had a spiritual reverence for all, which practiced being in harmony with the natural kingdoms: minerals, plants, animals, and other people - is to better understand the essence and meaning of ALOHA.

From April 1st to April 12th, I had the honor and privilege of spending time at theHaiku Permaculture Initiativeon the island of Maui, Hawaii, where, in addition to meeting new friends and re-encountering old ones, I got to learn about the importance of agroforestry and soil science.In my time there, I developed a newfound love and respect for working harmoniously with Nature.
