Sante Fé 2012

Author: Michael Wright

We are excited to report on our 1st annual Ski day for the Santa Fe group. santefe1There were seven children and nine adults two of which were Brasilleros, one who was having her first experience on skis.

The group assembled under a large Douglass Fir at the base chair lift and an orientation was given on safety and meeting times were discussed. The conditions were ideal with six inches of fresh powder and very little wind. The skiers (and snowboarders) began the day with excitement and camaraderie.

As a New Enchantment activity the goal is to make a connection to nature through an activity, an interaction that brings the observer closer to the greater design that is within the natural environment. A location for a picnic lunch was chosen high on the mountain in a natural bowl where large boulders had landed and locals have made a large snow shelter within the rocks. santefe3bThe surrounding area is covered by large snowdrifts at the base of an area known as Ravens ridge. When the sun shines from above at high noon the light is reflected into the clear blue sky. When the wind blows through the pines the sound is meditative carrying with it the clean scent of Pine. There is serenity in this high place where a peace exists in nature that we are so fortunate to be able to appreciate.

On an overcast Sunday a small group assembled at the Santa Fe Ski basin to attend a guided wildflower identification hike. Dave Gruenveld a professional Hydrologist, and botanist, guided the group through the lower mountain meadows. santefe2bThe tour covered most of the vegetation and the eco system that supports life. Tree dating and health was discussed, flower genus and species, water table and absorption, as well as animal life.

A Fall Activity is being planned involving kids and youths, it may be a hike along the Rio Grande near Embudo NM.

May the sun smile at your door, Michael.
